Honest Burgers, Bristol

I first visited a branch of Honest Burgers back in 2015 and it was amazing, but it was a shame that they were only available in London as I didn’t visit that often, aside from a few trips for work.

A burger restaurant where I can actually have a burger in a bun is seemingly still quite a rarity, so when I found out that a branch was going to open in Bristol I was extremely excited!

At the beginning of July the latest branch opened in Clare Street (just down from Cosy Club) and I’ve already visited twice!

If you don’t know much about Honest Burgers, here’s some more information about them taken from their website:

We met working at a restaurant in Brighton, while at university. We loved restaurants. We talked about them, worked in them, ate in them, and thought ‘we could do better than them’.

We decided to open Honest over a pint in our favourite pub. And that’s what we wanted it to be: a pull-up-a-chair local with good people and good food.

From the start, we wanted everything to taste homemade. Which means it has to be homemade. So we make as much as we can ourselves, in our kitchens.

Our chips, rosemary salt, veggie fritters, iced tea, lemonade, pickles, relish, and Honest sauces are all made by hand, by us. Now we’ve got our own butchers, we’ve got burgers covered too.

When Brixton opened, we were still learning. We worked hard. We got things wrong. We put them right. We kept getting better.

Then Jay Rayner described our chips as “edible crystal meth”. There were queues round the block after that. The buzz took us completely by surprise – and made us work even harder.

It doesn’t seem that many people know about the Bristol branch yet, as on both occasions I’ve visited it’s been pretty quiet (despite it being quite a small venue compared to other eateries in Bristol), but I’m certainly not complaining if it means I can get a table! 🙂

The menu is the same across all branches (bar local specials), but the main thing to be aware of is that most of the menu is, or can be made, gluten free. That means gluten free burgers, buns, chips, chicken wings and onion rings amongst other things!

I haven’t tried much of the menu yet as on both occasions I’ve had the ‘Honest’ burger (a beef burger with red onion relish, smoked bacon, cheddar, pickles and lettuce), as quite frankly I love it!

All burgers are served with rosemary salted chips (also gluten free), which makes the portion pretty big, but at a cost of £11.95 I think it’s good value, especially compared to similar restaurants in Bristol where I can’t enjoy as much of the menu, or sometimes even have a bun!

I should mention that there is an additional charge of £1 for a gluten free bun – that does still annoys me, but I still think the overall cost is good value.

The first time I visited the Bristol branch I’d actually forgotten about the portion sizes being quite so large, so I ordered some onion rings too…. Yep, I won’t be doing that again unless they’re for sharing! 🙂

Honest Burgers

I think the wording on the mayonnaise bottle perfectly sums up Honest Burgers!

Honest Burgers is definitely one of my top gluten free recommendations for Bristol, so if you live in Bristol or are visiting, you really should try it out.

  1. It’s nice to know Honest Burgers have opened in Bristol, but it’s also disconerning when they themselves say there’s cross contamination in their kitchens. I’m disappointed that the ex group organiser of the Bristol group for Coeliac UK would recommend this restaurant to other coeliacs potentially putting them at risk.

    • That seems an extremely personal comment, but I will give my considered response.

Not one restaurant will ever guarantee that they are free from cross contamination unless they are solely a gluten free restaurant and as we all know these are few and fair between!

I have not made any comments regarding their cross contamination control methods but having never had any issues there and think I am allowed to write a review and share that with my readers. If you don’t wish to read such reviews then that’s your choice, but my opinion is my option.

    • I think this is an extremely helpful blog and gives people the information they need to make an informed decision about where they eat. I’d suggest that rather than make personal remarks about the blogger you simply unsubscribe.
