My first blog post back has to be about one of the best examples of gluten free food that we’ve had over recent months.
A few months ago we visited the Lake District for our final break before the baby arrived. We’d visited Windermere a few years ago but that was in my pre-coeliac days, so I did some research into hotels and eateries before we booked our trip, just to make sure I would be ok.
We arrived quite late in the day on our first night due to a very long drive up from Bristol. As a result, I liked the idea of going for a walk rather than sitting down to a meal, so we decided to get fish and chips.
Somewhere that had come up on a few gluten free searches was Vinegar Jones, a fish and chip shop in Bowness-on-Windermere, which just happened to be a few minutes away from the hotel we had booked (although we didn’t know that until we went to try to find it)!
It’s obviously a very popular fish and chip shop as it was very busy when we arrived!
It has a seating areas upstairs, as well as in the main part of the shop and outside on the street, so if you did want to sit down and eat you can do that too.
They have a separate fryer that they use for their gluten free options, so although this causes a slight delay, it’s great to know that there will be no cross contamination issues.
I can’t remember the cost of the fish and chips, but it was certainly on a par with normal prices, and it was definitely worth every penny….
The portion sizes are very generous, but ultimately it’s all about the quality and taste and these are definitely the best gluten free fish and chips that I’ve ever had! Rich even said the same and he was comparing them to ‘normal’ fish and chips. We absolutely loved them! 🙂
The batter was gorgeous and not too thick (I find that batter can sometimes be too thick and then detracts from the fish itself).
The chips were fluffy inside but crispy outside and there were certainly a lot of them, as you can see from the photos.
It was great to be able to eat such good quality and tasty food whilst looking out across Lake Windermere, which has to be one of my favourite places.
To be honest, we loved the fish and chips so much that we went back again another night, and we were only in the Lakes for a few nights!
If you’re visiting the Lake District then I would definitely recommend a trip to Bowness-on-Windermere (home to The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction which I also thoroughly recommend!) and to Vinegar Jones – you will not be disappointed! 🙂
