I received a selection of four packets of miniature friands from their gluten free range, all of which had interesting sounding flavour combinations. I received the following flavour friands: White Chocolate Cashew & Lemon, Raspberry, White Chocolate & Pistachio, Flourless Brownie and Dark Chocolate & Hazelnut.
These friands are described as having ‘an irresistibly light egg white and almond based sponge, mixed with white chocolate and grated lemon zest, and finished with cashews’.
Unfortunately I couldn’t taste the lemon element of this cake which was a shame, as it meant that it just tasted like a plain sponge. I would have preferred the lemon to have tasted stronger to make the cake more distinguishable. This is definitely down to personal taste though, as my boyfriend commented that he could taste a hint of lemon.
The friands were however, really moist and had a lovely crisp edge to the top which certainly made them very enjoyable.
These miniature friands have actually won a ‘Great Taste Gold 2012’ award from The Guild of Fine Food and this isn’t a surprise. These brownies are lovely!
Described as ‘perfect for all chocolate lovers, each mouthful of our decadent brownies is extremely satisfying’ and that is very true. They are made from dark Belgian chocolate (minimum 60% cocoa mass), free range eggs, and are completely flour free.
Each friand has a soft, gooey centre but also a crunchy top which makes for a brilliant texture combination when you bite into them. They are also very chocolately, but as they are only small cakes the chocolate isn’t too overpowering.
BTempted have a tip on their website to warm the friands in the microwave for 20 seconds and then add a scoop of your favourite ice cream and some berries. Unfortunately I have only just seen this tip, otherwise I definitely would have given that a go!
In these friands the ‘egg white and almond based sponge is speckled with dark Belgian chocolate (minimum 60% cocoa mass), and finished with chopped hazelnuts for added crunch’ and although these are nice, I think this flavour combination may have been my least favourite out of the four, but it was one of my boyfriend’s favourites!
They are definitely one of the more attractive looking group of friands though, as they had marbled chocolate running throughout them along with some decorative chopped hazelnuts on the top.
As with most things which include raspberry, this was my favourite of the four flavours. You could certainly taste the almond element of these cakes and the raspberries and pistachios on top of the cake again made for a lovely texture.
These friands are described as having ‘an irresistibly light sponge, with white Belgian chocolate and grated lemon zest, finished with a dash of raspberry and chopped pistachios’. Again, I couldn’t taste any element of lemon in this cake, but I don’t think that it’s needed anyway, as the flavours in these friands are perfect as they are.
Overall I think these miniature friands are lovely and they are the perfect size for a quick snack, but as they’re so moreish if you’re like me you’d probably eat all of them anyway!
Each 120g / 6 miniature ovals packet retails at £4 and they are available to purchase on the BTempted website, as well as other stockists in London.
